Trauma-informed approach: Addressing secondary trauma through organizational transformation
This article examines secondary trauma as a common occupational risk for professionals who support trauma survivors. It argues that individual coping strategies are not enough without sustained organizational change. Through a trauma-informed approach, the authors identify gaps between research and institutional practice and highlight key factors such as organizational culture, psychological safety, leadership, supervision, and ongoing evaluation. The article also shares lessons learned in Puerto Rico and practical tools for organizations seeking to strengthen staff wellbeing and prevent retraumatization.
